A New Chief Of Justice

KTM Metro Reporter

July 18, 2017

Kathmandu: Newly appointed Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli took the oath of office and secrecy from the president in presence of Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun, Prime Minster Sher Bahadur Deuba, and Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar at the resident of the president on Monday, July 17, 2017.

The Parliamentary Special Hearing Committee meeting has unanimously endorsed Gopal Parajuli for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal on Sunday, July 16, 2017. Then, The Constitutional Council has made recommendation to the president for appointing Gopal Parajuli to the Chief Justice.

Following the recommendation of the Constitutional Council, President Bidhya Bhandari appointed Gopal Parajuli to the Chief Justice pursuant to the Article 129 (2) of the Constitution, the news in “gorkhapatra” stated on July 18, 2017.

Currently, the State lawsuits have been moving slowly contrary to the time of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. At that time, the State cases moved very fast ultimately leading to the parliamentary motion to impeach the Chief Justice Sushila Karki.

For example, the lawsuit DIG Nawaraj Silwal filed at the Supreme Court moved very fast and the government’s decision on appointing Jaya Bahadur Chand to IG was revoked, and asked the government to follow the rule of law for promoting the police officers. That triggered the parliamentarians to submit a motion to impeach the chief justice. Currently, the second lawsuit Nawaraj Silwal filed at the Supreme Court has been placed on the back burner.

Certainly, to face a motion to impeach is a humiliation. Sushila Karki is the first woman chief justice and the first woman to face the motion to impeach, and second to the Chairman of CIAA Lokman Singh Karki that also had faced the impeachment.
