Meeting Of Leaders Of Three Main Parties

Issue 45, November 8, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On November 3, 2009, leaders of the three major parties such as United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC) and Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist (CPN-UML) have met at the residence of leader of CPN-UML KP Oli: one of the vociferous opponents of the UCPN-Maoist. After the meeting speaking to the reporters, they have said that they have discussed the political situation in a friendly environment and are sure of coming to the consensus politics. However, Prime Minster Madhav Nepal has refused to comment on the results of the meeting.

Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda, his deputies such as Mohan Vaidya, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai and Narayan Kaji Shrestha, NC Parliamentary Leader Ram Chandra Poudel, senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba and Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat, CPN-UML senior leader and Prime Minister Madhav Nepal, General Secretary Iswor Pokharel and KP Oli of CPN-UML have participated in the meeting.

Some NC leaders have been saying in public that they are ready to form a new national unity government including the Maoists with the consent of current Prime Minister Madhav Nepal. So, a new political tendency has been developing and the NC leaders are ready to doing away with Madhav Nepal for bringing in the Maoists in the government and come to the consensus politics. The Maoists have been questioning the legitimacy of the Madhav Nepal Government.

It might be due to the pressure of the international community that has been advocating the consensus politics rather than politics of confrontation. It is clear from one of the strong opponents of the Maoists: KP Oli holing a meeting of the leaders of the three major political parties at his residence with a dinner.

Recently, the international community has successfully put the pressure on the opponent of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, to pull back his candidacy for the presidency in the runoff election scheduled for November 7, 2009 making the Election Commission to declare Karzai the winner and the President for the third term in Afghanistan. Similarly, the international community has put pressure on the Honduras government to negotiate with the deposed president and restore him to the office.
