Election for Nepali Congress Parliamentary Leader

Issue 25, June 21, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Finally, an election for the Nepali Congress parliamentary leader is going to be held on June 20, 2009 after 15 months of the election held for the Constituent Assembly-cum-parliament on April 10, 2008. President of Nepali Congress Girija Prasad Koirala has been claiming to be the parliamentary leader of his party.

Suprabha  Ghimere, Kul Bahadur Gurung, Sher Bahadur Deuba and Ram Chandra Poudel have announced their candidacy for the Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader.

Suprabha  Ghimere stands for a change in the working style of the party to make the party healthy and long lasting whereas General Secretary Kul Bahadur Gurung has claimed the position, as Sher Bahadur Deuba and Ram Chandra Poudel have already enjoyed positions of prestige, power and benefits in the past; Senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba says that he has been the parliamentary leader three times so he must get the position this time, too; Nepali Congress Vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel also says that he is one of the senior leaders so he has a claim for the position.

On June 20, 2009, speaking to the anchor of the morning program called ‘Antar Sambad’ of the state-run Radio Nepal, Nepali Congress parliamentary member Narahari Acharya has said that the election for the Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader is going to be the test of the voters whether they are for a change or for continuing as it is; the senior leaders have brought the Nepali Congress party to the current state of dismal performances; so, we need a change for the good health and future of the party.

The election committee has published the names of 114 parliamentary members that are eligible for voting in the election. Candidates are going to register their names at 8:00 A.M., then the election will be held and the results will be out by 1:00 P.M. on June 20, 2009.

Candidates have to win at least 50% of the total votes in other words they need to secure at least 58 votes to get elected. If none of the candidates does not get the 50% of the total votes then an election will be held between the two candidates who have garnered highest votes.

Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala has opted for not putting forward his candidacy for the Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader this time. Possibly, he may declare in a near future that he is retiring from the active politics. He has called all four persons who have declared their candidacy for the position of the parliamentary party leader over to his residence at Maharajgunj and has urged them to work on the consensus politics if not they compete each other for the position in the election fairly.
