Nepali Congress Not For Extending Term of Constituent Assembly

May 20, 2011: the Central Working Committee (CWC) of the Nepali Congress (NC) on Thursday, May 19, 2011 has decided not to extend the term of the current Constituent Assembly (CA) in the prevailing political circumstances, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of May 20, 2011 writes.
In the meeting held at its central office Sanepa, members of the CWC demanded to annul the seven-point deal reached between Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda and Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal just before the election to a new prime minister on February 03, 2011. The deal has put Mr. Khanal in the office of prime minister.
The meeting also has endorsed a ten-point demand put forward by the NC, as a condition to support the extension of the term of the CA for another six months. NC General Secretary Prakash Man Singh has said that the NC would not support the extension of the term of the CA without meeting the ten-point demand.
At the same time, Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal has met with NC President Sushil Koirala at his Maharajgunj residence seeking the support of the NC for extending the term of the CA for one year.
Talking to journalists after the meeting with the prime minister, NC President Koirala has said that he has made clear to the prime minister that the prime minister needs to complete the peace process before May 28 for extending the term of the CA.
Chairman of Madheshi People’s Rights Forum - democratic Bijya Gacchedar also met with NC President Koirala at his residence yesterday and agreed to oppose the proposal for extending the term of the CA.
