No Possibility Of Returning Monarchy In Nepal

Issue 17, April 28, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

April 27, 2013: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) headed by Pashupati Shumsher Rana, and Rastriya Janashakti Party (RJP) headed by Surya Bahadur Thapa held a joint convention as an exercise to merge the two parties into a single party. At the convention, the parties came to the conclusion that the possibility of returning the monarchy has been nil, and the possibility of declaring Nepal a Hindu state also has been nil. So, the two parties opted for the republican setup and the secular state, according to the news published in ‘Rajdhani’ daily today.

Now, the single Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-Nepal) headed by Kamal Thapa has remained for restoring the monarchy and the Hindu state in Nepal. Four members of the dissolved Constituent Assembly belonging to the RPP-Nepal voted against abolishing the monarchy and declaring Nepal a secular state in 2008 whereas members of RPP, and RJP had voted for abolishing the monarchy and declaring Nepal a secular state.

RPP, and RJP leaders realized that they would have difficulty in garnering the support of the Nepalese people for their parties if they were to advocate the restoration of the monarchy and the Hindu state, as the current Nepalis have been quite different from even of the 1990s.
