Anniversary of Tibetan Uprising Against Chinese Rule

Issue 11, March 15, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

March 10, 2009: Every year Tibetans in exile and in Tibet commemorate the anniversary of the Tibetans’ uprising against the Chinese rule on March 10, 1959. Last year, Tibetans in Nepal had staged a number of rallies against the Chinese rule in Tibet commemorating the March 10 uprising. In Tibet, too, monks and ordinary Tibetans had staged widespread rallies against the Chinese forcing them to use heavy forces to crackdown on the rally organizers and participants.

This year, the Chinese Authorities have put extra efforts on not repeating the story of the mass rallies against the Chinese rule in Tibet in Nepal and Tibet. The Chinese Authorities sent a special envoy to Nepal to meet with the Nepalese Prime Minister and other political leaders to stop any sorts of Tibetan rallies in Nepal.

In Tibet, the Chinese Authorities took extra precautions to stop any sorts of Tibetan rallies. They sealed off the border between Nepal and Tibet and restricted the visit of foreign tourists and reporters to Tibet.

In Nepal, the Government of Nepal has been policing the areas round the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. No rallies and demonstrations have been reported so far.
