Celebration of Martyrs’ Day in Nepal
On January 30, 2008, the Government of Nepal celebrated the 67th Martyrs Day garlanding the statues of the martyrs. The then-despotic Rana rulers took the lives of four brave Nepalese such as Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Sukra Raj Shastri, Ganga Lal Shrestha and Dasharatha Chand Thakur for speaking out about equality of all humans.
Some political analysts say that the celebration of the Martyrs’ Day has been a ritual of garlanding the statues of the martyrs with roses and making the day holiday for the celebration. The government has done nothing to make the dreams of martyrs come true.
Relatives of the people died in the People’s Movement in April 2006 said that the government has done nothing for meeting the aspirations of the Nepalese people demonstrated during the April movement. The government has not punished the culprits for killing the innocent people taking part in the peaceful rallies, and has not made public the whereabouts of the missing people.
