Election For a New Prime Minister Starts Off
By KTM Metro Reporter
July 21, 2010: the legislature has started off the election for a new Prime Minister. The legislators have held a vote for UCPN-Maoist Prachanda first, as he is the first person to register his candidacy for Prime minister at the secretariat of the legislature. He has received 242 votes from the 601-member legislature. He needs at least 301 votes for getting elected. His party has 237 votes and five more votes are added to.
Obviously, the Madheshi legislators have not voted for Prachanda although he is nearest to meeting the Madheshi people’s demands for federalism, autonomy and proportional representation at the state administration, police and army. Apparently, they are waiting for the highest bidder for their votes once they have not followed their ideology or demands they have made in the past. Maybe, they are waiting for seeing the results of the voting for the next two candidates of the NC and the CPN-UML. If they cannot garner enough votes for getting elected then the Madheshi leaders might claim for the position of Prime Minister but they need the support of either the UCPN-Maoist or of the NC and CPN-UML together, which might be unlikely.
The next voting will be held for the candidate of the NC Ram Chandra Poudel. His party needs the support of the CPN-UML and the Madheshi parties in block or the support of the UCPN-Maoist. So, Mr. Poudel’s chance of getting elected depends on whether he can garner the support of these vote blocks or not.
Same condition applies to the candidate of the CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal, too. So, this time, the majority votes for any candidate might be elusive until any one of them could buy the 301 votes required for a majority.
