Eighty-Five Judges Cleared of All charges

Issue 49, December 09, 2007

The Judicial Council headed by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal, Kedar Prasad Giri dropped the cases of abusing the power against 85 district and appellate court judges according to “The Himalayan Times” of November 27, 2007. However, the Judicial Council did not disclose the names of the judges cleared of all charges. “The names of the judges must be made public. Otherwise, it will be a violation of the Right to Information Act of 2007,” President of Supreme Court Bar Association, Prakash Raut, told “The Himalayan Times.” Judicial Council member Motikaji Sthapit representing the Prime Minister on the council said, “We have decided to drop the cases as there were no grounds to initiate further process against the judges. The Judicial Council is not compelled to make public the names of the judges cleared of all charges.”
