Food Production Going Down By Eight Percent In Nepal

May 18, 2013: The Ministry of Agriculture has projected the production of food crops would decrease by 8% during the current fiscal year as compared to the previous year. According to the projection of the ministry, the production of food crops would be around 8,738,000 metric tons during the current fiscal year while the production was 9,458,000 during the last fiscal year, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.’

 

Speaking at a press conference held at the ministry on Thursday, May 16, 2013, spokesperson for the Ministry Dr. Prabhakar Pathak said that the production of the foods crops would decline this year due to the unfavorable monsoon in the harvest season of the major food crops such as paddy (rice), maize and wheat. “The untimely rainfall affected the production of our entire foods crops over the year. However, our technologies and hybrid seeds also contributed to save the significant decline in the foods croups this year”, he said

 

Production of paddy (rice) and maize would decline by 11% and 8% respectively during the current fiscal year as compared to the last year. Production of paddy and maize has increased during the last year due to favorable monsoon.

 

Farming areas also deceased by 4% this year as compared to the last year. A total of 3,344,046 hectares were under the crops this year while a total of 3,484,395 hectares were last year. The productivity also would decrease by 4% to 2,613 kg per hectare during the current fiscal year while the productivity was 2,714 kg per hectare last year. 

 

Production of paddy (rice) would be around 4,504,503 metric tons this fiscal year whereas the last fiscal year production was around 5,072,249 metric tones. Similarly, the projected production of maize would decrease by 8.3% to 1,999,010 metric tones during the current fiscal year. However, the production of wheat would increase by 2% to 1,882,220 metric tons during the current fiscal year. The wheat production in the last fiscal year was around 1,846,107 metric tons.
