Statues of Three Legendary Figures

On October 11, 2009, Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Sharat Singh Bhandari and Minister for Culture of Kaluga State of Russian Federation Alexander Tipalov have jointly unwrapped the Statues of three legendary figures such as Sir Edmund Hillary, Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Bories Lisanevich on the premises of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB). Non-Resident Nepalese Association, Russia (NRN, Russia) in cooperation with ETNOMIR Russia have made funding available for the statues. The statues are set up as one of the promotional activities of the Nepal Tourism Year 2011 (NTY 2011) and of enhancing the Nepal-Russia friendship.
Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa successfully reached the summit of the world’s tallest mountain called Sagarmatha but popularly known as Mount Everest for the first time in the history of mountaineering in 1953, and exposed Nepal to the world. Sir Edmund Hillary was the national of New Zealand. Tenzing Norgay Sherpa was a Nepali national.
Russian national Bories Lisanevich had set up a hotel in Nepal in early 1960s, and had been instrumental to attract foreign tourists to Nepal. Probably, he was one of the pioneers of promoting tourism in Nepal.
