November 29, 2012: a tripartite agreement has been signed off in Kathmandu today on providing the Election Commission of Nepal with the funding of 20 million euros to strengthen the electoral system, according to the PTI news. The Ministry of Finance, the European Commission (EU), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have signed an agreement on implementing a new phase of the project titled 'Electoral Support Project Phase II'.

Following the agreement signed today, the EU will provide the project with 20 million euros, and the UNDP with the Election Commission of Nepal will implement the project to strengthen the electoral system so that the Election Commission of Nepal will be able to hold fair and credible elections at the central and local levels.

"The project will support the ECN (Election Commission of Nepal) in carrying out its mandate of holding fair and credible elections, enhancing its institutional capacity both at central and local levels as well as increasing the capacity and reach of the newly established Electoral Education and Information Center," PTI quotes the statement issued by the EU.

Ambassador and Head of the European Union Delegation to Nepal Alexander Spachis said, "EU is committed to democracy around the world. This new support to ECN reflects EU commitment to consolidate democracy and peace in Nepal. Democracy is not limited to elections but periodic free and fair elections are the cornerstones of any democracy."

The 'Electoral Support Project Phase II' is a four-year project. The Election Commission and the UNDP signed off a separate project implementation agreement.  The project will promote activities to maintain stakeholder confidence in the electoral process and will support the ECN in meeting their increasingly advanced information and communication technology needs.
