Again Not Reaching A Consensus On Breaking Political Gridlock In Nepal
By KTM Metro Reporter
December 17, 2012: political leaders have been very optimistic about breaking the current political gridlock until the fourth deadline for forming a consensus government expired today afternoon; senior leader of NC Sher Bahadur Deuba had even said that the NC should take the latest offer of the UCPN-Maoist and reach a deal to break the current political deadlock. However, talks remained inconclusive and the political leaders could not reach an agreement on breaking the political deadlock, and let the fourth extension of the deadline for forming a new government passed without any results.
One meeting after another held among top leaders of the major political parties during the last 5 days ended without making any positive results. They went back to their original stand not giving away even an inch to build a consensus on breaking the deadlock.
Before paying the state visit to India in the last week of December, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav wanted to settle the political issues plaguing the country very much. So, the president has been putting pressure on the political leaders to resolve the contentious issues and institutionalize the achievements made by the people’s movements of different times.
Obviously, Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai refused to quit the office without resolving the serious issues such as removing the constitutional hurdles to holding elections and setting the date for holding elections to a new CA to make sure the government after him would hold elections.
However, the opposition wanted the prime minister to quit the office before resolving the political issues clearly indicating that the opposition leaders had been after the power regardless of what would happen to the elections to a new CA.
"We were about to reach a deal on the formation of a new government but the Prime Minister has declined to step down," said Vice-president of NC Ram Chandra Poudyal, the prime minister was hesitant to accept a new government under the NC leadership, according to PTI news.
Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has set conditions of announcing the election date and the opposition parties participating in his government to transform it into a national unity government at least for some time before he could turn over the office of prime minister to the NC, writes nepalnews.com.
According to the Prime Minister Dr Bhattarai's aide Bishwodeep Pandey, the announcement of date for the Constituent Assembly polls in Baisakh (April-May), an agreement to turn the current government into a national unity government, amendment to the election-related constitutional provisions and conclusion of the peace process should be made before turning over the government to the NC as told to the nepalnews.com.
Leaders of the top four major political forces are likely to go to the President Dr Ram Baran Yadav again asking for another extension of the deadline for forming a consensus government even though the president has said that the deadline extended for the fourth time would be the last one.
