Squabbling Over Ministerial Portfolios

Issue 23, June 7, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On June 4, 2009, eight ministers have taken an oath of office of ministers from the Prime Minister at the presidential residence. Six of them are of the NC members, one is of the MPRF and another is of the CPN-ML. However, only Sujata Koirala of the NC and Bijaya Kumar Gacchedar of the MPRF have received the ministerial portfolios. Sujata has got the portfolio of Foreign Affairs by the straight order of his father NC President Girija Prasad Koirala and Gacchedar has received the Deputy Prime Minister as the bargain for his support for the Prime Minister in making a majority in the parliament.

Other six persons need to wait for the bargaining of other political parties and probably of their own parties for the ministerial portfolios.

The CPN-UML has not been able to decide whom to send to the government and what ministerial positions they will get. So, its members have been conspicuously absent in the oath-taking ceremony on June 4, 2009.
