Voters’ Identity Cards

Issue 46, November 14, 2010

BY KTM Metro Reporter

November 07, 2010: after the cadres of Madheshi political parties obstructing the distribution of voters’ identity cards based on the citizenship certificate stating they have difficulty in getting citizenship certificates consequently majority of Madheshi voters will lose the franchise in the terai areas, and following the suggestions of different political parties for issuing voters’ identity cards based on other evidences, too, the Election Commission (EC) in a statement has said that it will accept other documents, too for issuing voter’s identity cards in terai on November 03, 2010, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of November 05, 2010 writes.

The EC will accept identity cards issued by the organizations such as government offices, local agencies such as Village Development Committees (VDCs) and municipalities and education institutions and land registration certificates for incorporating persons’ name on the voters’ lists according to the statement. The EC will accept the recommendations of the VDCs and municipalities with the names, date of birth and places as evidences for enlisting their names on the voters’ lists.

On November 06, 2010, the political party called ‘Janamorcha Nepal’ has shown its serious concern over the decision of the Election Commission recently made on accepting the recommendations of other agencies for distributing digital voter's identity cards to the people in terai because it will award digital voter's identity cards to non-Nepalis, too if the EC does what it has said in the statement concerning the voters’ identity cards, nepalnews.com writes quoting the state news agency RSS. This is not acceptable to the ‘Janamorcha Nepal’ because the government has a plan to use the new voters' lists for issuing the National ID Cards, it will be suicidal for the nation to go with this decision.
