Relief Package And the Opposition

September 11, 2011: speaking at the Reporters’ Club: a public forum for politicians to express their views, some cadres of NC and CPN-UML have said that the relief package announced by the current government is nothing more than the publicity, as the most of the things mentioned in the package fall in the purview of the regular business of the state, and they have alleged that the government has put forward the relief package for distracting the people’s attention from the peace process and the constitution writing according to the news posted on the nepalnews.com.
On Friday, September 9, 2011, the Finance Minister has read out the 12-point relief package to the reporters at the press conference held at the hall of the National Planning Commission.
In the relief package, the government has committed to table two important bills such as Disappearances Bill and Truth and Reconciliation Commission Bill at the parliament within 15 days and get them endorsed, return the seized properties to the rightful owners through the local administration, and start the recruitment of Madheshis for the Nepal Army following the deal the government has reached with the UDMF.
Following the relief package, the government will reduce the prices of sugar, rice and some other foodstuffs. Four major state-owned companies would work jointly to open fair stores elsewhere in the country for selling the basic necessities for the benefits of the poor.
Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and his finance minister needed to scarp the subsidy on fertilizers introduced by Madhav Nepal and increased by Jhalanath Khanal. The Rs 3 billion subsidy on fertilizers is waste. Dr. Bhattarai needs to stop the waste of the taxpayers’ money immediately.
