Yet Another Court Ruling on Corruption Case

Issue 09, February 28, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

The bench of Chief Justice of Special Court Gauribahadur Karki and Judge Omprakash Mishra has sent Director of Department of Custom Khemraj Bhattarai to 13 months jail and fined him Rs 30.78 millions for illegally amassing a huge wealth while in office according to the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of February 24, 2010.

Similarly, the Special Court had sentenced and fined current Governor of Central Bank called Nepal Rastra Bank Bijyanath Bhattarai for corruption but the Supreme Court of Nepal overturned the ruling of the Special Court and acquitted him. Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has reinstated him to the position of governor again.

So, it would not be a surprise if the Supreme Court of Nepal acquits Director of Department of Custom Khemraj Bhattarai, too.

Former President of Nepal Bar Association Biswokanta Mainali had once said that an appointment to the position of a judge is a license to corruption for which the Supreme Court had suspended him from working as an advocate for six months. However, the Supreme Court annulled the decision after the Nepal Bar Association launched a no-cooperation movement demanding the annulment of the decision on suspending Mr. Mainali from working as an advocate for six months.
