Seventh Amendment To Interim Constitution

Issue 05, January 31, 2010

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On January 28, 2010, two-third majority of the legislators has passed the seventh amendment to the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 paving the way for the President and Vice-President to take oath of office in their mother tongues and put signatures on the text of the oath in Nepali.

Taking the oath in Hindi, Vice President Parmananda Jha has been the focus of criticism, and ultimately, the Supreme Court of Nepal has ruled to take the oat of office in Nepali within seven days otherwise he would be suspended from the office. Jha did not retake the oath of office rather chose to be suspended.

Legislators of three major parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML including other legislators of small political parties have voted for the amendment bill and passed it. Vice-president-elect Jha might need to retake the oath of office before resuming his duty
