May 5, 2011: Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal has officially brought the Kathmandu-Bhaktapur four-lane road into operation on Tuesday according to the state-run news agency RSS. The expanded road is of 9.1 km long from Tinkune to Surya Binayak in Bhaktapur.
Initially the Chinese government built it and even installed a trolley bus on it but the NC government led by Girija Prasad Koirala dismantled the trolley bus paving the way for the private company of his relative to run minibuses on this route.
This four-lane road has eased the traffic from Tinkune to Surya Binayak in Bhaktapur. Previously, the traffic on this route was always crowded. We took almost one hour whenever we traveled about 10 km in this section of the road. Now, it takes hardly 15 minutes thanks to the Japanese grant of Rs 1.77 billion and for constructing this section of the road.
Prime Minister Khanal said, “Japan is a close friend of Nepal, and the new road is the symbol of good friendship between the two countries”.
Japanese Ambassador to Nepal Tatsuo Mizuno has said that the road is the symbol of friendly relations existing at the people’s level between Nepal and Japan.
