Can Badal Be Next Prime Minister?

Issue 49, December 2, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 28, 2012: Chairman of CPN-Maoist Mohan Vaidhya Kiran has put forward the name of General Secretary of CPN-Maoist Ram Bahadur Thapa Badal as a candidate for the next prime minister. Chairman Vaidhya also has claimed that his former colleagues such as Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda and Vice-Chairman of UCPN-Maoist and Prime Minister Dr. Baburam, Bhattarai also have given the nod to his proposal for making Badal a next prime minister.

Chairman Vaidhya also told the reporters that it would be betrayal to the people if they did not make Badal a next prime minister. During the people’s war they have made a promise to the people that every Nepalis would be treated equal.

However, only a few reporters seem to be convinced by the argument of Chairman Vaidhya. Following the call of President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, a candidate for a new prime minister should be acceptable to all political parties.

Even for the NC leaders, finding a consensus candidate of their party for a next prime minister has been an uphill task. President of NC Sushil Koirala is seeking the support of senior leader of NC Sher Bahadur Deuba, and Vice-president of NC Ram Chandra Poudel but Deuba wants to trade his favor to Koirala with the Acting President of the NC, and Poudel has complained that Koirala is trying to bypass him seeking the nomination of his party for a new prime minister.

It has been almost sure that the NC leaders will not be able to name their candidate for a next prime minister within the deadline the head of state has set. So, the NC and the CPN-UML are to seek the deadline extended.

The ruling coalition of the UCPN-Maoist and the UDMF is set to stick to the current situation. Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda has urged the head of state to transform the current government into a unity government, and has also called on the NC and the CPN-UML leaders to join the current government taking the ministerial portfolio of their choice.

However, Deputy Prime Minister Bijya Gacchedar has made some good words for Sushil Koirala and told Koirala that he was ready to support Koirala for his prime ministerial ambition provided Koirala could garner the support of the UCPN-Maoist, and could make the position of the NC on the federalism and the Madheshi issues crystal clear.

According to the latest news, the UCPN-Maoist has categorically rejected the government of the NC and the CPN-UML, and decided to call on other political leaders to join the current government to make it a unity government. So, chances of other leaders taking the office of prime minister have been slim.
