November 4, 2013: Today is the Nepal New Year day following the Nepalese calendar called Nepal Samvat. President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, and Chairman of Interim Election Council of Ministers Khilraj Regmi wished ‘Happy New Year’ to all the Nepalis.
A rich merchant called Sankhadhar Sakhava introduced the Nepal Samvat paying off debts of all citizens 1134 years ago, as nobody should be debtor in a new year following a new calendar. He named the calendar by the country rather than by the name of anybody.
Nepal had a calendar before the Nepal Samvat but Sakhava wanted to introduce a new calendar. With the permission of the then monarch, he introduced a new calendar Nepal Samvat.
Nepalis follow the Nepal Samvat for celebrating the festivals. It is a lunar calendar. It starts on the first day of the bright fortnight (kartik sukla pachaya) of Kartik (October-November).
After the reinstatement of democracy in 1990, the government of Nepal declared Sankhadhar Sakhava a national celebrity, and celebrated a new year following the Nepal Samvat.
