On June 17, 2009, speaking at the Reporters’ Club in Kathmandu, General Secretary of NC Kul Bahadur Gurung has announced that he will stand for the parliamentary leader of his party in the election to be held on Saturday, June 20, 2009. He also has said that his colleagues Sher Bahadur Deuba and Ram Chandra Poudel have already enjoyed the positions of prestige, power and benefits a number of times in the past, so they need to cooperate with him on making him the parliamentary leader.

The annual report of the US State Department on Global Trafficking in Humans says that the Government of Nepal has been making efforts on stopping the trafficking in humans but has not fully met the minimum standards required for the elimination of trafficking. Nepal has been one of the main sources of the commercial workers for the Indian brothels.

On June 17, 2009, realizing the encroachment on the Nepalese territory and the harassment of the Nepalis by the Indian Border Security Force, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has instructed the Chief Secretary to ease the lives of the people living in the Nepalese territory on the Nepal-India border including the Koilabas in the Dang district setting up armed police posts along the border areas, and providing basic necessities to the people living there.

On June 17, 2009, the parliamentary party members of the CPN-UML have demanded the Government of Nepal to start the diplomatic moves on correcting the Indian encroachment on the Nepalese territory and the Indian Border Security Force harassing Nepalis living in the Nepalese territory on the Nepal-India borer areas.

On June 17, 2009, the cadres of the UCPN-Maoist have staged a sit-in at the prohibited southern gate of the Secretariat at Singhadarbar protesting the death of Rajendra Phuyal: Kathmandu District member of the UCPN-Maoist.

On June 17, 2009, the Supreme Court Bench of Justice Kalyan Shrestha and Justice Avadesh Kumar Yadav has ruled that the students belonging to any caste, ethnic groups and communities have rights to study at School of Veda run by the Pashupati Area Development Fund in Kathmandu. Previously, only the students belonging to the Brahman caste are allowed to study at the school.
