Nepalis Challenging Callers Of Shutdown
By KTM Metro Reporter
May 13, 2013: callers of the shutdowns of the Kathmandu Valley and Nepal have been calling off one shutdown after another when Nepalis have been ready to fight against the callers.
Number of students’ unions called the shutdown of the Kathmandu Valley on May 9, 2013 in protest against the appointment of Lokman Sigh Karki to the chief of the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA). The day was Mothers’ Day. Nepalis in general and sons and daughters in particular have to visit different temples in the names of their deceased mothers or visit their living mothers to revere them. So, most of the Nepalis were ready to fight back if the students were serious to enforce the shutdown. The students called off the shutdown otherwise a number of scuffles were anticipated on that day.
Then, the students again announced the shutdown of the Kathmandu Valley on Sunday, May 12, 2013 again in protest against the appointment of Karki to the chief of the CIAA. The day is for the students to take examinations of the 12 grade, and the day also is the day for holding wedding feasts. Students and common folks opposed the call of the shutdown on this day, too. The students wisely called it off otherwise they would have seen how the Nepalis reacted to the shutdown.
The CPN-Maoist-Vaidhya called the shutdown on May 13, 2013. The day is the day of starting off the festival of pulling the chariot of Lord Matsyendranath in Patna. The day is the most auspicious day for the Nepalese Hindus to perform all sorts of religious activities including the marriage and adulthood ceremony. Many people of the Nevah community make offerings to the ancestral deity on this day. Most of the Nepalis were prepared to fight against the cadres of the CPN-Maoist-Vaidhya if they were to come on the streets enforcing the shutdown. Chairman of the CPN-Maoist-Vaidhya shamelessly withdrew the call of the shutdown.
Common folks asked the callers of the shutdowns, “Why Mr Vaidhya of the CPN-Maoist-Vaidhya or the leaders of the students go to the office of the CIAA and shut it down until Mr Karki was removed from the chief of the CIAA?” They could not dare to do so because they did not want to receive the baton charges of the security. So, it was not easy to shut down the office but the easiest was to punish the common folks.
The international community has been deadly against the shutdowns. The international community has made it clear that the leaders of the parties that call the shutdowns will not be granted visa for their countries. But one of the leaders of NC Arjun Narshing KC told in public, “We don’t need their visa.” Nothing is so stupid than to say so.
The terror of shutdowns has scared away the international visitors to Nepal. Most of the bookings have been cancelled. They took other destinations. It has adversely affected the tourism industry of Nepal. Rumors of shutdown in Nepal have been the talk of everybody not only in Nepal but also in the international arena.
One-day shutdown of Nepal causes the loss of Rs 2.5 billion according to the study of the Federation of Nepal Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Does Chairman of the CPN-Maoist Vaidhya cares for the loss of such huge sum of money causing millions of the poor people to lose meals a day? Mr Vaidhya thinks that he is a savior of the proletariats but he is actually driving them to the death stopping them from going to work.
