Decreasing Number Of Entry Points For Increasing Custom Revenue

Issue 33, August 14, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 7, 2011: at the time of the six-day training program held by the USAID/Nepal in cooperation with the Department of Custom for training 40 Custom Officials on the custom valuations and management, some so-called exerts have opined that the open border between Nepal and India has been the main cause of evading custom, so the number of entry points should be decreased for managing the export and import businesses for the purposes of controlling the evading of the custom, ‘Gorkhapatra’ of today writes.

However, reducing the number of entry points means increasing the cost of import because of the rise in the transportation cost caused by the additional distances the goods trucks have to travel if the nearby entry points are closed. So, it is not wise to reduce the number of entry points rather should be increased to ease the transport of goods traveling back and forth between Nepal and India.
