Construction of BP Highway

On Monday, April 27, 2009, Prime Minister inaugurated newly completed ten kilometer section of the 160 km long BP Highway. Speaking at the inaugural function, the Prime Minister has said that the elected government has conceived the BP Highway in 1958; now the elected government is going to complete it.

Minister for Physical Planning and Works Bijaya Kumar Gacchadar said that the construction of the BP Highway was started in 1959 but after the king taking over the power from the elected government in 1960, he put on hold the construction and only after the people’s movement in 1990, the government has again started works on it.

The government has been constructing the 160 km BP Highway with the grant assistance of the Government of Japan since in 1995, and has completed the construction of 123 km. After the completion of this highway, it will bring the eastern parts of Nepal close to Kathmandu. Passengers will be able to travel back forth from Biratnagar to Kathmandu in a day. It will be an alternative highway, too.
