Underage Maoist Combatants Out Of Cantonments
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
On January 7, 2010, a first batch of underage Maoist combatants has come out of the Dudhauli cantonment: some 200 km (125 miles) southwest of Kathmandu amidst a ceremony. After the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in November 2006, the Government of Nepal and the Maoists have confined about 20,000 combatants in the cantonments monitored by the UNMIN; of them about 3,000 are of underage.
The Government of Nepal has provided them with Rs 10,000 and given the choice of vocational training or a package of education up to a twelve grade. However, reports say that some of them have already left and those on leave have not come back for ceremoniously leaving the cantonment. Following the action plan on releasing the underage combatants, the Maoists cannot rehire them for any combat. About 200 underage Maoist combatants have left the cantonment today. The process of releasing the underage combatants will continue until February 8, 2010.
