Celebrating Father’s Day In Nepal

Issue 34, August 19, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 17, 2012: Nepalese Hindus as well as Buddhists celebrated ‘Father’s Day’ today following the age-old tradition of celebrating it on no moon day of August.

Thousands of men performed ‘shradha’ means offerings made to their deceased fathers across Nepal. Hundreds of men performed a group ‘shradha’ at the temple to Lord Gokarna Mahadev in Kathmandu. Nepalis believe that the souls of their departed fathers come to this place on this day and accept the offerings made by their sons to them.

To the living fathers, sons and daughters offer delicacies and gifts on the Father’s Day. Then, sons bow down to their father's feet, and daughters simply touch their hands in reverence. Fathers in turn bless them. All daughters and sons assemble to celebrate the Father’s Day.

Nobody knows when Nepalis have started the tradition of Father’s Day. The tradition must be at least two-millennium old.
