Coalition Government in Pakistan

Issue 08, February 24, 2008

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Two large political parties such as Pakistan People’s Party headed by the widower of former Prime Minister Benezir Bhutto, and Muslim League of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharrif agreed to form a coalition government in Pakistan. Pakistan People’s Party won 87 seats and Muslim League 68 seats in the general elections held on February 18, 2008, just enough for forming a government but not sufficient to impeach the president as wished by Zardari, leader of the Pakistan People’s Party. If the opposition party leaders are really serious about impeaching the president they need to garner the support of a number of small parties. The party supported by President Pervez Musharraf won 38 seats.

President Musharraf accepted the defeat in the polls, and made it clear that he is ready to work with anybody forming the Government. However, he is not in a mood to step down.

President George W. Bush declared the election in Pakistan was fair and it was the victory of the Pakistani people.
