After The Extension Of Term Of Constituent Assembly

Issue 23 ,June 05, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 31, 2011: speaking at the event held at the headquarters of his party at Parisdanda in Kathmandu yesterday to honor Apa Sherpa that has climbed Mt Everest: the highest peak in the world 21 times, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda has said that the extended term of the Constituent Assembly (CA) of the coming three months is the period of the litmus test for all the political leaders; extending the term of the CA for three months, the political parties have averted a great unfortunate incident but Nepalis will be honorable for three hundred years only if they can make a new constitution within this period otherwise they have to face a great risk, ‘gorkhapatra’ of today quotes Prachanda.

Replying to the question of the reporter of the ‘gorkhapatra’, Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal has said that he is ready to resign for building a national consensus on a new government but not before the leaders building such a consensus because last year after the resignation of the then prime minister, the ‘caretaker’ government had to run the administration for seven months, ‘gorkhapatra’ of today writes.

The fifth point of the five-point agreement endorsed by the parliament in the morning of May 29, 2011 clearly states that the prime minister will quit the office to pave the way for building a national consensus government. Now, he says he needs to wait for quitting the office until the political leaders build a national consensus on a new government. Is Mr. Khanal sincere to himself, as he has signed off the five-point deal document?

However, Mr. Khanal has also forgotten to say that he has been the main actor to create such an environment conducive to a ‘caretaker’ government whether he has done it deliberately to prolong the life of the most infamous Prime Minster Madhav Nepal or to suit his own interest in making himself a next prime minister, Mr. Khnal alone knows it. However, Nepalis know that he has held lawmakers of his party hostage for seven months and did not let them participate in the election to a new prime minister released only after making sure that they will vote for him in the election to a new prime minister. Now, Mr. Khanal says that he is working in the interest of the nation and the people sidelining his personal and party interest. Who believes him?

The regressive forces that have been hoping to cash in the event of the dissolution of the CA has receded their activities. However, some of them very bold ones have even protested against the extension of the term of the CA. After the extension of the term of the CA, disappointed regressive elements have packed up their activities.

One of the most unethical politicians Chairman of RPP-N Kamal Thapa has announced that lawmakers belonging to his party will not collect the allowances given to the lawmakers for attending parliamentary sessions on the moral ground. He believes that the extension of the term of the CA is an immoral act. So, four lawmakers belonging to his party voted against the extension of the term of the CA. All democratic minded and sincere Nepalis respect their rights to vote as they like in the democratic system of governance. However, if the previous Nepali Congress government had implemented the commission set up to look into the atrocities committed by the government of which Mr. Thapa was the Home Minister, Mr. Thapa must have been sitting behind bars.
