Laying Down 115 Km Optical Fiber Cable in Nepal

The state-run newspaper ‘The Rising Nepal’ of January 23, 2008, reported that in Dhulikhel about 30 km east of Kathmandu on January 22, Minister for Information and Communications, Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Ambassador of China to Nepal, Sheng Xianglin initiated the works on laying down the 115-kilometre long optical-fiber cable from Kathmandu to Khasa of Tibet: Autonomous Region of China. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Mahara said that the optical-fiber laying project would help expand Nepal's relations with different countries and stressed the need for constructing information highway in all regions of Nepal including the hilly districts in Nepal.
Ambassador of China to Nepal Sheng said that the project would help expand Nepal-China ties and stressed the need for cooperation of the Nepalese people for the successful completion of the project.
The project would complete in five months at the total cost of Rs. 260 million. Out of which, the Chinese government will provide Rs. 250 million and Nepal Telecom Rs. 10 million.
Nepal would be the transit point between India and China with the completion of the optical-fiber project.
