Issue 35, August 26, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 20, 2012: an 11-member panel headed by Central Working Committee member Bhim Bahadur Tamang set up to study the issues of federalism in its report has recommended 17 different measures to ensure inclusion of diverse ethnic groups at all levels of the state government the NC to consider, writes ‘Thehimalayantimes.com’.

One of the 17 measures suggested by the panel was to make a wide range of political representation of the people of all castes, communities and languages to the State and provincial and powerful local bodies matching to a proportional representation. Concerning the languages, Nepali and regional languages should be the official languages of provinces; basic and higher-level education should be made available in the mother tongue; religious diversity should be protected recognizing, protecting and promoting cultural festivals and traditions, according to the recommendations made by the panel, writes ‘Thehimalayantimes.com’.

The NC leaders averse to the ethnic federalism whether would accept the recommendations made by the panel remains to be seen. If the NC leaders accept the recommendations of the panel, then building a national consensus on the identity-based federalism would be surely possible without any hitches.
