UNOHCHCR Leaving Nepal

Issue 50, December 11, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 9, 2011: UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has made a telephone call to Nepalese Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai yesterday evening to inquire about the extension of the term of the UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR) in Nepal, as the term of UNOHCHCR ends today. Prime Minister Dr Bhattarai has clearly told the Secretary General that UNOHCHCR is leaving Nepal, as its term of office in Nepal has come to an end according to the official media reports.

Prime Minister Dr Bhattarai has said that the term of UNOHCHCR has been extended for six months for the last time, and the government is strengthening the National Human rights Commission.

Dr Bhattarai’s refusal to extend the term of UNOHCHCR indicates that he has dark spots on his clean image. He has made a cabinet decision on making recommendation for the presidential parole to the murder convicted by the Supreme Court of Nepal making a serious black spot on his image. Dr. Bhattarai is not surely for protecting the human rights of the Nepalis.

No matter what image Dr. Bhattarai carries if he is not for protecting the human rights of the people means he has lost the legitimacy to remain in the office of prime minister. He needs to quit the office immediately on the moral ground.
