Marking Reconciliation Day By Nepali Congress

January 1, 2012: Nepal Congress cadres and activists yesterday have marked the Reconciliation Day: the day when BP Koirala and Ganeshman Singh came back to Nepal from exile in India.
After the takeover of power from the corrupt Nepali Congress government by Mahendra in 1960, BP Koirala and Ganeshman Singh landed in the Sundari jail because not only the Nepalis in general but also the Nepali Congress cadres did not come out against the killer of democracy.
After killing the democratically elected government, Mahendra monopolized the state power and set up the so-called no-party political system: Panchayat and institutionalized the corruption and impunity that the Nepali Congress had started off after winning the general election in a massive scale in 1959. The corruption had killed the Nepali Congress government, later the Panchayat system and finally the monarchy. The current political leaders need to understand these historical facts.
BP Koirala and Ganeshman Singh got released from the jail in 1968 and immediately flew to India for political asylum. The then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi received them well and treated them as the state guests and provided them with the benefits any state guest could enjoy.
Due to the political circumstances developed in India, Prime Minster Indira Gandhi imposed a state of emergency in india in 1975 and started ruling the country with the dictatorial power causing great embarrassment to the democracy-loving Indians no matter how the law and order had worked. They preferred chaos rather than living under the dictatorial rule.
Jayaprakash Narayan: a socialist leader and other political leaders of different colors started off campaigning against the dictatorial rule of Indira Gandhi. By virtue of being a member of the socialist international, BP Koirala and Ganeshman Singh supported the campaign led by Jayapraksh Narayan.
Naturally, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi gave BP Koirala and Ganeshman Singh the option of stopping the campaign against her rule or quit India. She also stopped all benefits her government had provided them.
BP Koirala and Ganeshman Singh chose to come back to Nepal in 1976 at the risk of getting back to jail but by that time the Panchayat had been so weak and the opposition had grown so strong the Panchayat leaders did not dare to put BP Koirala and Ganeshman Singh back to jail. That was the reconciliation and the day they came back is the Reconciliation Day.
