September 18, 2013: the National Security Council (NSC): a constitutional body mandated to recommend the government to mobilize the Nepal Army (NA) has decided to deploy the NA believing that the strength of the Nepal Police and Armed Police Force are not sufficient to provide effective security during the elections in November, according to the Xinhua news posted on the English.news.cn.
Following the recommendations of the NSC, the council of ministers takes the decision on deploying the NA. The government is thinking to deploy 61,000 Nepal Army for the security of transporting ballot boxes, ballot papers and election materials.
The 33-party election-opposing front headed by the CPN-Maoist is against the mobilization of the NA warning of it inviting crisis in the country. The NSC has recommended mobilizing the army two days after the talks with CPN-Maoist failed.
The possible security threats are from former Maoist combatants, CPN-Maoist, armed outfits in the Terai and some militant organizations in the hilly region. The NA has already started to prepare for the election security plan, according to the news on the Xinhua news.
