Forming A Committee For Marking Nepal Samvat Year

Issue 44, October 28, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 22, 2012: a 36-member committee has been formed to mark Nepal New Year 1133 following the Nepalese calendar called Nepal Samvat. Engineer Mohan Krishna Dangol presides over the committee; former lawmakers such as Padma Ratna Tuladhar, and Laxmidas Manandhar are the advisors to the committee according to RSS/thehimalayantimes.com.

The government of Nepal has recognized it as a national calendar giving it due credit for its role in the religious lives of Nepalis. Almost all Nepalese religious events follow the Nepal Samvat. However, the former regime of the Shah-Rana had not only neglected it but also suppressed it for more than two-and-a-half centuries. However, it survived the most despotic rule in Nepal, as Nepalis have continued to mark their religious festivals following it.

Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai had declared Shankhadhar Sakhwa the national hero, as Sakhwa had set up the Nepal calendar called Nepal Samvat paying the debts of all the citizens. Nobody should be indebted at the time of introducing a new calendar. Sakhwa named it not by the ruler’s name nor by his own name but by the country: Nepal. So, both the Nepal Calendar and Shankhadhar Sakhwa are the prides of Nepal.
