By KTM Metro Reporter

August 27, 2010: the concerned official of the ministry of Foreign Affairs has signed a deal with the French security printing company called Oberthur Technologies for printing machine-readable passports (MRPs) today after the officiating Prime Minister has given a green signal to go ahead with the contract for printing MRPs despite Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala has refused to signed off the deal. The cost of MRPs will be around US$3.50 per piece.

According to the local news the Foreign Ministry will receive the first lot of MRPs after 70 days from the date of awarding the contract, and the Ministry will issue such passports to the people after 15 days from the day of the receipt of MRPs from the printing company.

The Government of Nepal was supposed to issue MRPs on the April 01, 2010; however, the Government headed by CPN-UML Senior Leader Madhav Nepal has bogged down in the issue of who is getting what from the contract awarding either to the lowest international bidder or to the Indian state-owned company.
