Festival of Living Goddess in Kathmandu

Issue 39, September 30, 2007

By KTM Metro Reporter

Interim Head of State and Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala received the blessing of the Living Goddess called Kumari on September 25, 2007. Only the head of state is the rightful person to receive the blessing from Goddess Kumari for the state governance. According to the tradition, Goddess Kumari possesses the sovereignty of the people. So, the Goddess transfers it to the head of state, the people chose.

Some newspapers write erroneously that the tradition of the festival of the Living Goddess was 250 years ago. Legendary King called Gunna Kamdev set the tradition of taking Living Goddess Kumari around town for demonstrating the people that he had receive the rights to govern from the Goddess for a year. Two hundred and fifty years ago when the last Malla King Jaya Prakash Malla managed to get back the power lost to his son set the tradition of taking the Goddess on three-tiered four-wheeled chariot instead of a simple chariot carried on shoulder poles.

Some supporters of the royalists staged a protest against the Interim Head of State and attempted to disrupt the festival.
