Protest-free Area

March 2, 2009: The Ministry of Home of the Government of Nepal declared the areas around the Chinese Embassy in Nepal the protest-free area. In view of the upcoming anniversary of the Tibetan uprising against the Chinese rule in Tibet on March 10, the Home Ministry has take this measure making any protest rally at or near the Chinese Embassy in Nepal illegal.
The Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama fled to India after the failed uprising against the Chinese rule in Tibet on March 10, 1959. Since then the Dalai Lama has been living in exile in Dharmasala, India.
Thousands of Tibetans risked their lives to travel from Tibet via Nepal to India to visit their spiritual leader Dalai Lama.
Tibet was a sovereign state before the Chinese took it over in 1950. Since then Tibetans have been fighting for independence from the Chinese rule in Tibet. The Dalai Lama has been advocating autonomy for Tibet but the Chinese authorities have not been agreeing on giving even limited autonomy to Tibetans.
China has posted a long text titled “Fifty Years of Democratic Reforms in Tibet” on its website describing the achievement made in Tibet during the 50 years of its rule in Tibet.
