Government Doing Nothing To Maintain The Rule Of Law

Issue 22, May 2, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 28, 2013: speaking at the 13th anniversary of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Pokhara yesterday, Chairman of NHRC Kedarnath Upadhyay accused the government of doing nothing to maintain the rule of law in the country. He also said that the government’s decision on withdrawing criminal cases of more than 1,000 people had sapped the country’s law and order situation, according to ‘HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE.’

Chairman Upadhyay said that political parties covered up the perpetrators of human rights violence, and the government even promoted them to higher ranks in the security and administration weakening the governance system and security situation.

Criminals have been going free with impunity causing the threats to the human rights organizations and media houses that have been advocating for bringing the perpetrators of human rights violence to justice. “Of late, some human rights organizations and media houses were becoming target of different groups,” Upadhyay said because of the impunity escalating across the country, according to ‘HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE.’

Stating the Commission on investigation into disappeared and truth and reconciliation ordinance issued by the president was faulty, chairman Upadhyay urged the president to revoke the ordinance, as it would deprive the victims of justice and would make reconciliation impossible.
