Prachanda Again Supreme Commander of PLA

Issue 32, August 9, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On Saturday, August 1, 2009, the three-week long central committee meeting of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-Maoist) has concluded making Chairman Prachanda the Supreme Commander of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) again. After being elected for the first Prime Minister of Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal in August 2008, Prachanda quit the position of the Supreme Commander of the PLA. Then, Prachanda resigned from the position of Prime Minister on May 4, 2009 protesting the Presidential action of directly writing a letter to the Chef of Army Staff and ordering him to stay on in the job against the decision of the Prime Minister on firing the Chief of Army Staff paving the way for Madhav Nepal defeated in two constituencies to be a so-called elected Prime Minster shaming on the democratic-minded Nepalis.

The meeting also has made a decision on setting up three positions of three vice-chairmen, a general secretary and two secretaries, and appointed three senior leaders such as Mohan Baidya, Baburam Bhattarai and Narayan Kaji Shrestha to the vice-chairmen, Ram Bahadur Thapa to the General Secretary, and C.P. Gajurel and Post Bahadur Bogati to the Two Secretaries.
