Potholes, Dust, and Mud In Kathmandu

KTM Metro Reporter

Kathmandu, July 15, 2017: the newly elected mayor of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City as a candidate had said that to remove potholes, dust and mud in Kathmandu would be his first priority but even after more than a fortnight of the election, the newly elected mayor had done nothing to this end rather he had immediately attempted to buy the expensive iphones for him and his elected colleagues. It has indicated how sincere the mayor elected from the ticket of the CPN-UML has been. He needs to keep his words even to save the reputation of CPN-UML.

Buses, microbuses, cars and battery-operated three wheelers have been running on the roads of the Kathmandu with so large potholes that even the wheels of large buses sink wholly in potholes. The small vehicles often try to avoid the potholes as much as possible even risking the head-on collision with the vehicles coming from the opposition direction.

During the rains, the roads are full of mud. Sometimes, rainwater floods the roads when the heavy rains fall causing tremendous trouble to the motorcyclists, even to the cars, and micros buses. After the rains, the roads have nothing but dust. Vehicles running on the dust cause clouds of dust.

The residents of Kathmandu have been so resilient that they could endure everything. They simply bore the more than 14-hour power outage. Thanks to Kulman Ghising: the powerful CEO of the Nepal Electricity Authority, the power supply has been almost uninterrupted. However, the water supply has been once a fortnight if the area has been so favored otherwise many areas have no water supply for years but the people live on. Such has been the tolerance. Now, thanks to the laying of pipelines for the Melamchi Water supply, the potholes have been everywhere in the Kathmandu but the commuters live on without the public outcry. Commuters spend hours on the roads because of the traffic jam but they have kept quiet. How resilient Nepalese have been. They don’t complain nor shout at the newly elected mayor to keep his election commitments.
