Finance Minister Bharat Mohan’s Intention

March 30, 2011: the Nepalese media has been full of the news about the resignation of Secretary to Ministry of Finance Rameshwore Khanal. The news says that Finance Minister Bharat Mohan Adhikari wants to get rid of Secretary Khanal to cover up the evaders of billions of rupees worth of value-added tax (VAT), as Secretary Khanal has been instrumental to uncover the VAT evasion and is for taking strong actions against the evaders.
Everybody understands what the motives of Deputy Prime Minister holding the portfolio of finance Bharat Mohan Adhikari. Even a fraction of the evaded VAT will enrich the Deputy Prime Minister considerably.
Former Prime Minister Madhav Nepal had made billions of rupees stealing from the state treasury directly or indirectly. Now, Mr. Adhikari wants to make millions of rupees out of the evaded VAT.
If Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal is to prove he is not the part of this episode, and be free from taint then he needs to fire his deputy Adhikari immediately, and demonstrate he is not tolerating any sots of corruption otherwise Mr. Jhalanath Khanal is just like his predecessor Madhav Nepal in making money stealing from the state treasury.
