Nepalese Prime Minister Meets with Other Leaders In Rio

June 22, 2012: Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai met with his Indian counterpart Dr. Manmohan Singh on Thursday evening, June 21, 2012 on the sidelines of the Rio +20 summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During the meeting, the Indian Prime Minister has shown his concern over the current situation and hoped that Nepal would manage the current political situation prudently, the state-run news agency RSS quotes Prime Minister Bhattarai as saying after the meeting.
During the meeting with Nepalese Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, the Indian Premier expressed willingness to extend full-fledged support to Nepal for economic agenda. Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said India is ready to provide full support to Nepal in any way Nepal government seeks.
After the meeting, Prime Minister Dr Bhattarai said, ‘India wants Nepal to complete the peace process and have a strong multiparty democracy in line with the aspiration of Nepali people’ ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today quotes the prime minister as saying.
India today said that the fluid political situation in Nepal would not affect the recently signed Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA): a key step to boost bilateral economic ties, PTI reports today. The revised tax treaty was signed during the Finance Minister Mr Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to Nepal last year. The agreement, among other things, will facilitate exchange of information on banking between the two countries and will exempt Indian investors and traders from paying tax in India once they pay taxes in Nepal according to the PTI report.
Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai and Secretary-General Ban held talks on a number of issues including the peace and constitution making process, political situation in Nepal, development of Lumbini and issues of the least developed countries (LDCs) on the sidelines of the Rio+ 20 Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister apprised the Secretary General of political situation in Nepal following the expiry of the Constituent Assembly and the efforts of the government on having dialogues with the opposition for building a consensus among the political parties on the completion of the remaining tasks of a new constitution.
