Nepal Police Fully Capable for Poll Security: No Need of Army

On April 04, 2008, at the press conference held at the Police Headquarter, Kathmandu, Inspector General of Nepal Police Om Bikram Rana said that Nepal Police and Armed Police Force (APF) were fully capable of managing the security for the successful completion of the Constituent Assembly Election to be held on April 10 across the country according to ‘The Rising Nepal’ of April 05, 2008. "We have not envisioned the role of Nepal Army in the election, as the number of security personnel required during the election is all sufficient by all means,” Inspector General of Nepal Police Rana said. Across the country, the government has decided to mobilize 135,000 security personnel including Nepal Police and APF personnel. Of them, 56,000 are regular and 48,000 are temporary Nepal police personnel, 25,000 regular and 6,000 temporary APF personnel.
The security plans designed by the Nepal Police for the CA polls has three phases such as pre-election phase, election phase and post election phase. Following the pre-election phase, Nepal Police has managed the security for the high-level leaders, security for the candidates, security in the mass gathering and rally during the election campaigning and publicity. During the election, it would manage the security for the voters, polling booths, ballot boxes, vote counting places, emergency and air patrolling and the security for election observers and media persons. Following the post-election phase, the security personnel will provide security to the victory/possible opposition rallies and security for the victorious candidates.
