Attack on Press?

Issue 40, October 07, 2007

By KTM Metro Reporter

The activists of the trade union affiliated to the Maoists have said that they have been putting their reasonable demands forward to the management of the Kantipur publications and had hold several rounds of talks to settle the issues but the management failed to meet their demands; so they have been obstructing the publications of the advertisements but the management has stopped the publication of the news papers charging them obstructing the newspaper publications.

The management went to the Appellate Court and got the court order for keeping the striking workers out of the premises of the publication house. The management fired some union activists flaring up the dispute, and provoking the workers to intensify their fights.

On Monday, October 01, 2007, the promoters, managers and journalists of the Kantipur Publications went to the Prime Minister asking for resolving the labor dispute. Prime Minister Koirala attempted to assure them that the government would never compromised with anybody on the attack on the press freedom. However, the government has failed to stop both parties from fighting against each other so far.

Independent analysts say that some political leaders and the journalists labeling the labor problems at the Kantipur publications, as the attack on the press freedom is not justified. They say that the government should ensure both the parties follow the Labor Act and the Publication Act, and should take actions against the erring party; however, the government has been insensitive to act according to the prevailing laws and attempting to cash in such incidents for the political gains.
