Election Activities In Nepal

March 30, 2013: former US President Jimmy Carter arrived in Kathmandu yesterday, and is in Nepal for a three-day visit to ascertain the election activities. President Carter met with President Dr Ram Baran Yada of Nepal and discussed the upcoming elections in Nepal. President Carter is going to meet with other political leaders, too. From Nepal, President Carter is going to Myanmar. President Carter has set up a carter center in Nepal.

At the meeting held yesterday, the Interim Election Council has decided to form a three-member committee to talk to the political parties opposing the upcoming elections. Minister for Home Madhav Prasad Ghimire, Minister for Health and Population Bidhyadhar Malik, and Minister for Information and Communications Madhav Prasad Poudel are on the committee. On behalf of the IEC, they will consult, coordinate and talk to the political leaders concerning various matters related to elections, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatra’ of today.

At the regular meeting yesterday, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav had instructed Chairman of IEC Khil Raj Regime to talk to the opposing political parties, and bring them to participate in the upcoming elections. The president also asked the Chairman to expedite the elections related activities and set the date for elections.

The High-level Political Committee of the four parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC, CPN-UML and UDMF held a meeting yesterday. They have discussed why the IEC has not been able to set the date for elections even after 16th day of its formation, and decided to urge the Chairman of IEC to set the date for elections without delay. The committee also decided to talk to the opposing political parties including the CPN-Maoist-Vaidhya, and Madheshi People’s Rights Forum-Nepal.

The staffs of the district election commissions have continued updating voters’ lists in various districts despite the attempts of the cadres unleashed by the CPN-Maoist-Vaidhya. The security have confronted with the cadres, and provided the staffs of the district election commission with security to perform their duty, according to ‘Gorkhapatraonline.com’ news of today.

A group of four men could not be identified smashed a laptop, a photocopy machine and tore up 66 voters’ lists in Bhaktapur around 10 o’ clock on Friday. According to office chief Churamani Panthi, two of them held office assistant Prakash Nepal and driver Bidur Thapa while the two others vandalized the items. The Bhaktapur police have been searching the whereabouts of the unidentified men, according to the ‘Gorkhapatraonline.com’ news of today.
