EU Offers Significant Assistance To Nepal for Elections

October 2, 2013: the European Union (EU) has offered a significant amount of assistance for holding the successful elections to the second Constituent Assembly. This assistance has been provided to the Election Commission through the Government, according to the RSS news posted on the ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.
The EU is one of the major donors to the 'Electoral Support Project (ESP) Phase II', a multi-donor project run by the United Nations Development Project (UNDP). The ESP is a four-year technical assistance project that aims at the institutional strengthening and professional development of the Election Commission.
According to the information provided to the RSS by the delegation of the EU to Nepal, the project activities are focused on major areas such as strengthening the capacity of the Election Commission to function as a permanent, independent, credible and professional institution of governance.
The project emphasizes on the assistance for increasing the democratic participation in the forthcoming cycle of elections and for ensuring an inclusive electoral process for including the under-represented groups and vulnerable and traditionally marginalized communities.
The EU has provided the ESP with 10.8 million US dollar. The International Department for Development (DFID) of the UK has put in 6.6 million while Norway and Danish Development Agency (DANIDA) have provided 3,486,635 and 740,000 US dollars respectively.
