Indian Cooperation On Building Tube Wells In Nepal Terai

issue 46, November 14, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 08, 2010: Ministry of Finance and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu have signed a memorandum of understanding to build 1,000 tube wells in the two Terai districts of Mahottari and Dhanusha; and talks are going on for some additional tube wells to build in other districts in the Terai area known as the ‘rice bowl’ of Nepal, the Economictimes.indiatimes.com reports today.

The irregular monsoon rains have been causing either drought or heavy rains. In both cases, the victims are the rice fields. Late rains cause drought and make rice fields suffer from the lack of water for rice transplantation, and heavy rains cause floods in the rice fields causing damages to the rice plants. These natural uncertainties cost the nation the food shortages.

According to the UN Forest and Agriculture Organization, 3.4 million out of 28 million Nepalis face food shortage. The food shortage slows down the growth of children and makes the lives of old people short, and adult farmers less productive.

So, the Indian cooperation on building such a large number of tube wells in the Terai area will help to mitigate the drought and even manage the floods during the uncertain monsoon rains.
