Diarrhea Epidemic Again
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On August 13, 2009, speaking to the radio anchor in the morning program called ‘Antar Sambad’ of the state-run Radio Nepal, Minister for Health Umakanta Chaudhary has attempted to shift his irresponsibility for controlling the diarrhea epidemic in the mid-western districts such as Jajarkot, Rukum and Baitadi saying if the previous government has done something concrete to control diarrhea it would not have spread as an epidemic.

Recently, Health Minister Umakanta Chaudhary has spent a week in the mid-western districts for not having any aircraft due to the unfavorable weather conditions to fly back than the need for his presence in those districts. If the minister’s presence could stop the diarrhea epidemic he should have gone to those areas rather than going to Germany at the cost of the Germany agency GTZ to attend the conference intended for his secretary for a week.

It also has indicated that the Ministry of Health can run its businesses without the presence of the Minister for weeks then what is the use of such ministers who have become heavy burdens on the Nepalese taxpayers.

On August 12, 2009, the Cabinet of Ministers has passed a special program on providing the diarrhea epidemic affected people with relief. This is the second special relief program the Madhav government has passed. However, beneficiaries have continued to complain about not receiving relief materials and medical supplies.
