Chief of Army Staff Chattra Man Singh Gurung Sworn In

Issue 37, September 13, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On September 9, 2009, President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav presented newly appointed Chief of Army Staff Chattra Man Singh Gurung an insignia, and administered him an oath of office at the presidential residence in presence of Prime Minister, Defense Minister and other high-ranking officials. His term of office is for three years.

It has been possible for Gurung to be the first Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) as the result of the People’s Movement in 2006. His appointment to the CoAS is the process of building a New Nepal. During the past despotic Rana-Shah rule, none of the Nepalis other than Ranas and Shahs could dream of reaching such a high position. Currently, Nepal has a President of Madhesh origin and the CoAS of the ethnic Nepalis.

After the completion of the sworn-in ceremony, talking to reporters, Prime Minister Madahv Nepal has said that the government would complete the army integration process very soon as the Army Integration Special Committee (AISC) has been doing its best to bring them under the Committee.

Prime Minister might be right saying that his government would expedite the army integration, as the main hindrance to the army integration former CoAS Rukmangad Katuwal has gone.
